Mr. Anthony Jerome McKellar, 69 of Fairmont North Carolina passed away on May 26, 2021. He was the son of the late Mr. Wardell Howell and Ms. Elizabeth McKellar. Lovingly known as “Jitty” he was born on October 23, 1951 in Robeson County North Carolina. He grew up in North Fairmont and was one of the guys who lived on Madison Street. He graduated from Rosenwald High School and afterwards felt the need to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army and served in the Viet Nam conflict. His career included twelve years of dedicated service to his country. Upon the end of his last tour where he was serving as a Medical Specialist he received an honorable discharge.
Returning home with his honors as he received many awards and medals including a Bronze Star Medal, Expert Field Medical Badge, Driver and Mechanic Badge, National Defense Service Medal, Over Seas Service Ribbon, Good conduct Medal, Marksman Badge w/Rifle Component Bar, just to name a few. Jerome continued working and was employed in several different jobs. He worked many years at Rollar Jensen in Lumberton, North Carolina where he was a valued employee.
After years of working for Uncle Sam and others, he decided to work for himself. He became self employed as a Lawn Technician and loved that work that took him outside working with his hands. He liked working on cars and making things “tick”. He was a good mechanic and what we call a “Jack of all trades and a Master of none”. He was a die hard Washington Red Skins fan. He loved his German shepherd companion “Max” who is probably going to miss him more than we know. Jitty restored his membership with the Star of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church in 2008 and served to the best of his ability. He was a member of the Big 6 Male Chorus and his staple song was “Lord, You’re the Landlord”. He was well thought of in the church family, and he always greeted a person with his trademark grin. Because of his generosity when he could do a favor or help someone, he did just that. He could get excited about basketball or baseball; whether playing a game, or talking about a game or watching a good game on TV. Jitty loved people and if there was anything he could do for you, he would do it; or if he saw a need that someone had, he would try his best to meet that need and one didn’t have to ask. He will forever be remembered as a loyal friend.
He was proceeded in death by his parents and all of his brothers and sisters.
He leaves to cherish his memory a son Artis McKellar of Lumberton NC and a daughter Jacquelane Nicole McKellar Hill of Lumberton, NC; a sister Angela Thompson of Fairmont, NC; four sisters-in-law of Fairmont, NC and one brother-in-law of Lumberton NC ; his fiancé and very special friend that was dear to his heart, Ms. Eva Bethea of Maxton, NC , 9 grandchildren who he loved spending time with. He also leaves a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and friends
