Catherine Brown, beloved wife, mother, sister and friend, died Tuesday, September 13, 2022 at her home surrounded by loved ones. She was 70 years old. Ms. Brown was born Catherine Jean Pittman on May 15, 1952, to the late Wilton and Geneva Pittman, Sr. Catherine was preceded in death by her brother Wilton Pittman, Jr., and her nephews Jimmy and Anthony Pittman. Catherine, known by many as Jean, graduated from South Side High School in 1970. With the aid of her sister, Wilhelmina sneaking her in the house after courting hours, she was joined in Holy Matrimony to Hal Brown on September 1, 1972 in Dillion, SC. Hal never got a chance to say, “I do!” The officiant saw that Hal’s shirttail was hanging out and told him to “go over there and put your shirt in”… and she just kept right on reading. When he returned to the ceremony, all he needed to do was kiss the bride! Jean worked at Converse and later Alamac for several years while waiting for the big day. Finally in 1984, Kendra was born; then Halayna in 1985 and Ross in 1989. Hal had to have said, “I do” at least three times. Jean thrived as a wife and young mother so much so that she started her own ministry; The Healing Hands Ministry. Before, the children were born, she would soothe her husband’s hard days work by rubbing his feet. As the children grew up, they wanted to benefit from the Healing Hands Ministry too. They were now on her lap asking for a rub or a scratch and Hal was on the recliner. “Ma” knew how to make the good days into great days! When her health began to decline, she recalled her ministry and asked if she could get some healing hands for herself. Hal and all of the children gladly complied. On September 1, 2022, Hal and Catherine Brown celebrated 50 years of marriage. For 18,250 days, Hal had been saying, “I do” - He said it every single day. Catherine Jean Brown will forever be remembered by her husband, Hal Brown of Fairmont, NC; two daughters, Kendra Brown of Raleigh, NC and Halayna Brown of Fairmont, NC; one son, Ross Brown of Fairmont, NC; brothers Earnest Pittman of Fairmont, NC, Ervin Pittman of Lumberton, NC; sisters, Wilhelmena Pittman of Lumberton, NC, Eva Paige of Fairmont, NC, Eloise Gaddy (Clyde W) of Fairmont, NC, Mary Stephens of Lumberton, NC and Anita Pittman of Fairmont, NC; one sister-in-law, Pearl Pittman; three grandchildren, Geneva McKoy of Fairmont, NC; Journey Sarai Gordon and Royal Jean Brown of Fayetteville, NC; a special daughter Jamila Gordon, and a host of nieces, nephews, family, friends and her dog, Kindal.
