Earlene Hill Currie was born April 17, 1931 in Robeson County to the late Mr. Jerry Hill and Mrs. Molly Matilda Campbell Hill. She was the youngest of their 13 children who all preceded her in death.
She attended Rosenwald High School where she a popular student and also a school bus driver. It was there that she meet her husband Rudolph Currie. Their marriage was blessed with five children. Earline served as major caretaker of the children as her husband was away on the road delivering very essential merchandise. Being one of the first successful African American couples in the 60's to own their own business Earline assisted in running their trucking company and also took care of their farm while Rudolph was away. Earlene was the matriarch of the Hill and Campbell Families. She always attended family reunions for both gatherings and always cooked good ole country eating. She was respected and beloved in the Orrum, Proctorville and Fairmont community’s and enjoyed a good joke. She was a good “Baker” as well.
Earlene loved to serve as she was a member of Antioch Baptist Church in Proctorville, North Carolina where she served as an usher and missionary for over 50 years. She was the secretary of The Community Club and was honored as a Pearl by Zeta Phi Beta. Even in her 90's she could be seen driving around in her Caddilac , going to Lumberton and anywhere else she wanted to go. She enjoyed spending time on the telephone when she was not out and about. She could be counted on to win any contest she entered. She was hard to beat.
