Evelyn Smith

Mrs. Evelyn Smith McArthur was born on August 15, 1946, in Rowland, North Carolina.  She was the daughter of the late Annie Jane Smith and the late John Thompson.  Evelyn attended Rowland Southside High and continued her education in New York beginning with getting a GED at one of the Community Colleges in The Bronx.  Evelyn accepted Christ at an early age and joined St. James Missionary Baptist Church in Rowland. She was an active member until she moved away to live in the city. 

She continued her education at New Rochelle University where she received a Bachelor Degree in the Arts.  Her concentration was in Social Work and she enjoyed helping others and counseling troubled youth and just being a role model for others. She held other jobs in her employment career which included an Insurance Advisor, a bank officer at Chase Manhattan Bank but enjoyed most her time at Children Services in the Child Protective Section in New York City.   Evelyn was a loving gentle person and always greeted one with a smile and she loved her family.

While living in the Bronx , New York Evelyn continued to serve her community and most of all the Lord.  She united with Friendly Baptist Church in the Bronx, NY and was an active member, dedicated to service in many capacities and also supporting the church financially.

Evelyn will be remembered for her fashion, her ability to dress so that she looked sharp and sophisticated.  Her ability to choose the right colors, (lavender was her favorite) the perfect accessories, and her classic well-made pieces. Y’all know about the beauty makeup and many stylish hair-do’s. Her look was always perfect even at home but especially when she went out. Evelyn loved to cook and shop and most of all she cherished spending time with her family. 

Evelyn passed away on Friday February 10, 2023 in the comfort of her home in the Bronx, New York City. She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Laura Smith and two brothers James Smith and Robert Smith;   Seven uncles and five aunts.

She leaves to cherish precious memories her husband Everette McArthur of the home, one daughter Brenda Smith Benjamin of Rowland, three granddaughters , Tishawn Smith of the Bronx, NY whom she raised, Brenisha (Tony) Smith of Georgia, Sha-Noul (Dexter) Watson of Rowland, NC; one great-granddaughter Amaria Smith, Bronx, NY; three great grandsons, Deandre Smith, Jemaine Mills  and Shelton Rodgers of Rowland, NC.  one great-great grandson Deandre Smith Jr of Rowland.  One son-in-law Alphonso Benjamin; three sisters Louise Smith, and Karen Smith, both of Rowland, NC; Barbara Jackson of Fayetteville, NC. Two brothers, Lee (Pam) Smith of Bronx, NY, Donald Smith of Rowland, NC. Five half-brothers, Dennis Williams, Robert Thompson (Sarah Mae), Frank Thompson (Mary) of Rowland, NC, Elworth (Rhonda) Thompson and Albert ( Mae Helen) Thompson of Fayetteville, NC; four half-sisters, Shirley Williams of Texas, Lora Smith and Sarah McCallum (Kent)   Laurinburg, NC , some special cousins, Winfred Baker of Rowland, raised like a brother, Annie Boyd of Texas and Shirley Stafford of PA. One uncle, Earl Smith, five Aunts, Annie Lue Vanderhall, Helen Reaves, Elizabeth (Carlton) Adam, Mable Smith, Agnes (Don) Stafford of Rowland, North Carolina and a host of nieces and nephews and friends..
