John Floyd Obituary

For I am ready to be offered, and the time of my departure is at hand.  I have fought a good fight, I have finished my course, I have kept the faith; Henceforth there is laid up for me a crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, shall give me at that day, and not to me only, but unto all them also who love His appearing".

Mr. John Robert Floyd of New Windsor, New York formerly of Lumberton, North Carolina, passed away on Thursday November 16, 2023 at the age of seventy-seven.  John was born on December 2, 1945 and was raised in Robeson County, in the city of Lumberton, North Carolina.  He was the son of both the late Mr. Robert Floyd and Mrs. Ester Mae Baker Floyd.   The service will be held at Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church on November 30th.  

John attended public school in Robeson County graduating from J.H. Hayswood High School in June 1963. He spoke highly of two of his teachers  Mr. Davis and Mr. Walker who made an impact on his life. After graduation he move to Newburgh, New York following his aunts Sarah Baker Cooper and Jeanette Baker Robinson.

At an early age John joined Sandy Grove Missionary Baptist Church in Lumberton, NC under the late Reverend William D. Burton.  He later became a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church in Newburgh, New York.

John had an extensive employment history.  Some of these included Star Expansion, Stauffer Chemical, Central Hudson-Danskammer Power Plant where he played on their softball team and West Point-Holleder Center where he took pleasure in driving the zamboni to make ice on the rink for hockey games.  He retired from West Point in December 2007.

John was a member of Nimrod Lodge #82.  He was a skilled card player and enjoyed spending hours challenging  his brothers and anyone who would take him on to a game of Bid Whist.  He always had a joke to tell.  He loved fashion and cars. John and his brothers realized their childhood dream of owning a business by opening Eureka Night Club in Newburgh, NY with some friends.

John was preceded in death by his parents, and sisters Janet Lajune Floyd Hester and Nettie Hester McNair and a special friend Fred Dillard who was like a brother to him.

John leaves to cherish his memories his companion Maxine Williams, one son Jermaine Floyd of Brandon, Floridal one stepson Roger Floyd of Mobile, Alabama; two daughters Angela Floyd Afflick (Collin) of Long Island, New York and Faith Floyd of Middletown, New York; Nine grandchildren, Nevaeh, Sahaira, Valyn, Kasyn, Victoria, Angelina, Madison, Hunter, and Elijah. Siblings: Weldon "Doug" Floyd (Ann), of Proctorville, NC, James "Koot" Floyd of Charlotte, NC, Carlton Floyd (Gwen) of Newburgh, NC Queen Ester Smith of Lumberton, NC, William Floyd of Lumberton, North Carolina a god daughter Carla of Middlehope, New York and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
