John McGill Obituary

Mr. John Wayne  McGill was born on November 8, 1950 in Fairmont, North Carolina to the late Eddie John McGill and the late Alice Amelia Milton McGill. He entered into eternal rest peacefully while at home in Washington, DC on March 7, 2024.  J.W. (John) was a beloved husband, father, brother and friend.   He grew up in a loving family and was educated in the Robeson County School System.  John graduated in May 1970 from Fairmont High School.    After graduation John moved to Michigan and was employed with Consumers Power Company as a Division Manager.  After the death of his father he moved back home at the request of his mother.  John accepted Christ as his personal savior at an early age. He was a loving and kind man and loved to play cards.

John married his classmate and friend, Anita Campbell on September 22, 1974.  They were the proud parents of one son Jamal Shawn McGill and one daughter Shana Lorene McGill.   John attended Florence-Darlington Technical Center in Florence, South Carolina and was awarded a certificate for a Tractor Trailer Operator on July 23, 1975.  He would go on to drive trucks for more than 20 years. Some of his first truck driving jobs were with Rudolph Currie Sr of Fairmont, NC; the Freight Company; Mercury Motor Company  Florence, SC.  While employed with Mercury Motors Company he was able to purchase his very first truck.  He continued to provide service for  Mercury as an independent trucker, under the name of John McGill Trucking.  John provided service for many company's hauling freight.  To name a few: National Freight, INC. Vinlalnd, NJ; also Lovette Company. 

John also was employed as a Licensed Instructor with Blanton's College Commercial Truck Driving School from 1989 - 1992. After his truck drivinig career, John began a second career as a security officer and worked for many places, such as Howard University; The World Bank, The Pentagon and some of Washingtn, DC and Maryland's largest prison's. John was preceded in death by his beloved parents, Ed and Alice McGill, his mother-in-law Ms. Lorene Campbell, three brothers, Tony McGill, James McGill and Lewis McGill; two sisters; Eloise McGill Terry, Alice McGill; two brothers - in- law Eddie Jenkins and R.K. Stephens John (JW) is survived by his wife of 49 years Anita McGill of Fairmont, North Carolina, one son Jamal McGill of Manhattan, New York; one daughter, Shana McGill of Chattanooga, Tennessee; Four sisters; Mary Lou Jenkins of Fairmont NC, Annie (Mike) Canery of Fayetteville, NC, Jean Ann (Huel) Faulk of Fairmont North Carolina and Josephine Jacobs of St. Louis, Missouri; three sisters-in-law Ruth McGill of Michigan, O'neal Lester of Marietta, North Carolina, Abby McGill of Fairmont, North Carolina; a brothe-in-law Chris Jacobs of Washington , DC. John also leaves a host of nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends. He leaves behind some of his many best friends just to name a few; Sidney Haggins, Gregory Haggins and Curmit Davis.
