Laura Elizabeth Williams Powell (affectionately known as "Lib") was born on June 1, 1949 to the late Shepard and Addie Blue Williams in Marietta, NC. She transitioned into God's kingdom on February 8, 2024 at Southeastern Regional Medical Center. Laura graduated from Rosenwald High School in 1967 and Robeson Community College in 1969. She obtained an associate degree in nursing. She was an LPN for over forty years and retired from Woodhaven Nursing home in 2016. Laura loved nursing and took pride in her job. Laura was united in holy matrimony to Walter Powell, the love of her life. They were married for 53 wonderful years. Walter and Laura were blessed with two daughters whom she loved dearly. Laura enjoyed gardening, reading the bible, cooking, and baking. Her home was always open to family and friends. Laura accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior and was active in spreading the gospel through many ministries. She was a lifelong member of Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church in Marietta, NC. She was a part of the Adult Choir for over forty years and served as president for thirty years. She served in many auxiliaries in the church. She was a member of the senior choir and the current president. She also served on the hospitality committee, the deaconess ministry and where ever help was needed. Laura participated actively in the annual Rainbow Tea with the color royal blue. She was instrumental in putting things together and designing the church float for the Marietta parade that she truly enjoyed. In addition to her parents, Laura was preceded in death by her loving sister Teresa A. McDowell. She leaves to cherish her fond and happy memories her loving and devoted husband Walter Powell of the home. Two daughters, Naterra (Dexter) McQueen of Raleigh, NC; Natoya (James) Carter of Fayetteville, NC; three grandchildren whom she loved and cherished DeAsia and Donovan McQueen and Jordan Carter. One great-grandchild Amari Carter. A cherished brother Titus (Barbara) Williams of Lumberton, NC; one aunt Eva Stevenson of Florida; Several brother in laws; Junior Earl (Mary) of Marietta, NC; Otis D (Barbara); Clarence (Bernetta) both of Charlotte, NC; one sister in law Brenda Thomas of Fairmont, NC. A Goddaughter, Shirlease Gaddy whom they were affectionally referred to as Thelma and Louise, a very special niece whom she called daughter Ingrid (Emmett) Brown and Erecia Gaddy. Her best friend Beatrice Pipkin. A dear friend Rita Green and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, relatives and friends.
