A Time to Be Born

Leon McLaughlin, son of both the late Cleveland and Dorothy McKellar was born on January 4, 1949 in Dillon, South Carolina.  He was raised in a Christian home and  confessed Christ as his personal Savior at an early age.  Leon was a typical teenager and graduated from Rosenwald High School in Fairmont.  He was loved by all his classmates and to most  our surprise he  was very quiet.  He always excelled in his classes and made his parents proud.

A Time To Grow and Learn

After high school Leon felt the need to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Marines.  He served for several tours as a Marine, which took him to many parts of the world.  Leon also did a tour in Viet Nam before he was honorably discharged after achieving the rank of Corporal. During his tours he earned the National Defense Service Medal; Rifle Expert Badge; Vietnam Service Medal; Combat Action Ribbon: Vietnam Cross of Gallantry; and Good Conduct Medal to name a few.

Leon was a devoted son, husband, father and grandfather.  He was a great provider for his family and lived a successful life.  Leon was an entrepreneur and was very successful in his businesses. He and Patricia owned business's in Lumberton, North Carolina for years and then decided to moved them both to Dillon, South Carolina; where they flourished, the McKellar Pawn Shop and  McKellar Financial Center.  He was known and loved by so many in North and South Carolina for his great stature, his smile and his ability to say things that would make one crack his sided.  No longer the quiet one he was well versed in current events and current affairs and loved sharing his opinions. He loved spending time with the family, especially the children and grand children and his classmates.  He was an active member of the Mill Branch Baptist Church of Fairmont and serve on several boards there.

A Time To Remember

Although Leon will be out of sight he will forever be remembered by those who loved him most, the love of his life, Patricia White of the home, two sons Keith McLaughlin of Florence South Carolina and Jeremy White of Fairmont, NC; one daughter,  Allison White of Fairmont, NC; three grandchildren, Madison McLaughlin, Nevaeh McLaughlin of Goldsboro, NC and Israel "Champ" White of Fairmont, NC; one brother, Bobby (JoAnn) Reed of Charlotte, N.C.  Four aunts; Mildred "Maggie" Campbell and Margaret "Smokie" Williams, both of South Carolina, Lennie Bryant of Fairmont, NC; Emma Lee McKellar of Lumberton, NC and a host of cousins and friends.
