Obituary

Mrs. Letha Mae (Rowland) Roberts passed away on April 22, 2021, in Washington, DC. 

She was born on August 10, 1941, in Lumberton, NC to Junius and Gertrude (Thompson) Rowland. She was  educated in the Robeson County School System.  After high school she married Neil Arch Roberts, and they shared a long lasting union for over forty years prior to his death in 2006.  Being an Army wife they traveled to many places in the United States and abroad. After her husband was honorably discharged from the United States Army, they settled in Washington, DC . She devoted her life to being a housewife and mother.  

Letha Mae enriched the lives of countless students in the District of Columbia’s public school system through her role as an early childhood educator. She received awards in recognition of her performance and services as a teacher and mentor at Dr. Charles R. Drew Elementary School in Washington, DC.  She worked within the District of Columbia’s Public School system for nearly twenty years.  It was not uncommon for her to actively volunteer to help students in need to obtain clothing and school supplies through fundraising activities.  She was loved and respected by students, parents, faculty and administrators. She loved listening to music, watching classic movies, and was an avid professional tennis fan.  She followed Venus and Serena Williams careers and could often be heard cheering for them during televised tournaments. She also deeply loved her children and grandchildren, and was known to tell everyone how proud she was of her grand-daughters and great-grandsons. She was respected throughout her neighborhood and greatly loved. 

She was preceded in death by her husband (Neil ), her parents Junius and Mary Leanna Rowland, and her brothers Horace, Wayne, and Ray Rowland. 

She is survived by her sons Neil Arch Roberts (Sabrina), Daren Roberts, Marcus Jay Roberts and daughters Glenda Renee Parker  and Kimberly Roberts of Maryland.  Her  brothers Junius Lee Rowland of Harrisburg PA, and Michael Rowland of Madison, Alabama. Her sisters, Bertha Greenwood of Hyattsville, MD, Mary Taylor and Veronica Rowland, both of Harrisburg PA. Her  grandchildren Chane Denise, Chant’e, Imani Letha, Arian Darshell, Lynn Marie, Kymberly Denyce and Amaris Maliya.  Great-grandsons Malachi and Jeremiah. She also leaves to cherish her memory sister-in laws, brother-in-laws  and countless aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

The family will receive relatives and friends on Saturday, May 8, 2021 at 11:00 am for the viewing at Hills Chapel, 302 N. Main Street in Fairmont, North Carolina.  The Celebration of Life Service will be held at 12:00 PM at Hills Chapel in Fairmont immediate following the viewing.  Burial will follow in the Magnolia Methodist Episcopal Church Cemetery in Hamer, South Carolina.    To view the webcasted Celebration of Life service login to  Facebook and key in the search bar Teri Taylor.
