Mrs. Mary Jane Grice was born April 28, 1946 in Robeson County, North Carolina to the late Mr. Freddie Grice and Mrs. Katherine Campbell Grice. Mary passed away peacefully into eternal rest on February 16, 2023 at UNC Health Southeastern Hospital, Lumberton, North Carolina.
Mary was raised in church, where she joined Ohovah African Methodist Episcopal Church in Barnesville, North Carolina at an early age. She later joined Minters Chapel in Boardman, North Carolina. Mary graduated from Proctorville High School where she was a member of the Glee Club. After graduation she began working at B.F. Goodrich. She was a member of the Independent Club which was a young group of women who helped the community. Mary worked as a teacher assistant at Fairmont Elementary School. She later decided to further her education by attending Pembroke State University where she obtained a Bachelor of Arts in Social Work. Afterwards, Mary took her talents to Robeson County Department of Social Services on February 1,1980 and retired as the Adult Services Supervisor on July 1, 2002.
In 1969, Mary married Melvin Rogers to whom she was a devoted wife for nearly 52 years. Two children, Taurus and Natasha, were born of this union. After marrying, Mary joined Star of Bethlehem Missionary Baptist Church where her husband was a longtime member. Mary served the Lord as a Deaconess, Missionary and shared her melodious voice as a member of several church and community choirs. She was a faithful member until her passing.
Mrs. Mary Grice Rogers was preceded in death by her parents, Freddie Grice and Katherine Campbell Grice, two brothers, Johnny Grice, William Grice, and one sister, Cora Grice McDowell, one sister-in-law, Rena Garland, and two brothers-in-law, Wilbert Sturdivant, and Willie Perry Rogers.
She leaves to cherish her legacy and memories, her loving husband Melvin Jacob Rogers, of the home; son Taurus Rogers (Kiva) of Richmond, Virginia, daughter Natasha Rogers (William Patterson) of Lumberton, North Carolina, and bonus daughter Wendy (Delious)Thompson of Durham, North Carolina; five grandchildren: Makiya, Caleb, DeAnna, Samantha and Amanda. Two brothers: Andrew Grice, Sr. (Janet) and William Ware, two sisters, Evelyn Joyce Rogers (Clark), and Gracie Lee Worley (Ricky) all of Fairmont, North Carolina; brothers-in-law Fred Rogers, Jr., (Rita), and Phillip Rogers (Yolanda) of Goose Creek, South Carolina, sisters-in-law, Jennie (George) Coulter, Joyce Sturdivant both of Hampton, Virginia, Tamalyn Jones of Columbia, South Carolina, and Dale Rogers of Fairmont, North Carolina along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
