Matthew Odom 73, of Rowland, North Carolina passed away on February 2, 2023. Matthew, born in Dillon, South Carolina was the son of the late Mr. James Odom and the late Adline Baker Odom. He attended the public schools of Robeson County graduating from Rowland High School in Rowland, NC. Matt felt the need to serve his country and enlisted in the United States Army on March 17, 1969. He served for three years and received many awards and medals, to name a few ; National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Bronze Service Star. He received training in CBR, Code Of Conduct Training, Geneva Convention, Projectionist Course, Ballistic Meterologist Crewman, Military Justice, and Vietnam Training. He received an Honorable discharge on January 20, 1972. After returning home from active duty Matt received an Associate Degree from Pembroke State University in Pembroke. Matt was employed at the Department of Social Serices as a Case Manager in the Economics Services Department and later worked as a Case Manager at the North Carolina Employment Security Commission in Lumberton among other jobs. He was a member of the American Legion Post 271 in Rowland. Matt always flashed a big smile and took life one day at a time. He was a loving brother, uncle and friend.
He was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, James Jr., Joseph and Clarence; two sisters; Patricia Cassell and Clara Newkirt.
Left with precious memories are his three brothers Moses Odom and David Odom both of Greensboro, NC, and Alexander Odom of Fairmont, NC; three sisters, Joyce Dennis of Averne, New York and Elizabeth (Charles) Brown of Purvis, NC. and Ruth Smith of Covington, GA; Two sisters-in-law and one brother-in-law, 8 Nephews, 12 neices and a god-son and a host of other relatives and friends.
