Secelia J. McMillan was born on January 4, 1961, to both the late John Henry Pighet and Jane McNair Pighet. She departed this life on October 5, 2023 at Carolina Rehabilitation Center in Fayetteville, NC. Secelia was a product of Robeson County Public Schools and graduated from Rowland High in 1979.
Secelia joined Beauty Spot United Methodist Church at a very young age. She was active in the youth choir, Sunday School and vacation bible school. She later joined New Covenant United Church of Fayetteville, NC where she was an active member up until her illness. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Pembroke State University, in Social Work and went on to get her Master’s from Fayetteville State in Early Education. After working in several occupations, she found her love in the classroom. She taught elementary education for 25 years, at C. Wayne Collier Elementary School, in Hope Mills, NC. "Those were her children." Her face would light up when she spoke of the kids and her many experiences in the classroom. She gave tirelessly to her profession going above and beyond with her time to prepare for “her children’s” academic success. She retired from the school system in 2011.
Secelia was preceded in death by her parents and her sister, Sharon Pighet. She is mourned by her husband, Kenneth McMillan, niece Twanette’ Bethea, of Charlotte, sisters Sallie Serna (Alfredo) of Jacksonville, Florida, Camille Bell (Ray) of Raleigh, NC and one brother, John C.
